A bison died of unknown cause in the spring, coming to rest near a river. I knew that the carcass would eventually attract predators, and so I set up several hundred yards away on the opposite river bank. After two days of waiting, a lone black wolf finally walked out of the forest. Keenly aware that I was there, the wolf kept a watchful eye trained in my direction while it ate, then calmly walked near the river to give me a better look before melting back into the forest as silently as it had come.
