One of the most unique experiences I’ve had in wildlife photography was watching this rock-climbing ermine on a cold day in January. Trying to get to some woodrats that were clinging to small outcropping on a cliff face, the ermine would rocket itself up these cracks in the wall a full forty feet off the ground. Several times it leaped at the woodrats, missing each time and then falling to the ground. The enormous pillows of snow made for a soft landing despite the height, and the ermine would immediately hop back up and shoot up the cracks in the cliff again!
