You never expect to see wolves at close range, which make the few times it happens an experience that few can match. After a heavy April snow, the world was covered in white. I noticed an animal trotting through the field, still far away, and thought it must be a coyote. Yet another few seconds of inspection made it clear the animal was far too large, and I knew it was a wolf. Separated from her pack, she stopped to howl, listen for a response, and then head towards her packmates’ replies – which just happened to be in my direction. As she trotted by I took a few photos, but mostly I just stared and enjoyed the moment.
